5 Year Anniversary hosted at Alexandra Palace Theatre
PRESS RELEASE
THE FUTURE IS SOUND - the visionary immersive event series dedicated to the transformative power of sound - has revealed details of its special 5th-anniversary event taking place this October 11th at Alexandra Palace, London, UK.
Established in 2019, THE FUTURE IS SOUND is on a mission to explore and redefine the impact music has on all of us, and over the last five years has forged a formidable presence at the forefront of redefining the intersection of Music, Culture & Societal Impact.
Guided by an unwavering conviction in the profound impact of music, FutureSound unites a diverse spectrum of individuals and organisations, supporting musicians and artists (both emerging and established), technologists, scientific researchers, spiritual leaders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers across a programme carefully curated to inspire, inform, and challenge perspectives.
Held at the historic ALEXANDRA PALACE THEATRE — a venue that has been a cradle of innovation and culture for nearly 150 years—the FutureSound evening event will be hosted by founder JIMMY KYRIACOU and guest co-host ADAH PARRIS focusing on exploring how music and sound have shaped the very spirit of cities, past, present, and future.
The conscious choice of venue reflects the mission of FutureSound; as the home of the BBC’s early broadcasts, Alexandra Palace played a crucial role in the development of modern sound technology, influencing the way cities worldwide embraced and integrated sound into public life.
Cities are living, breathing organisms by design, and music has always been the beating heart. Driving the cultural revolution of urban spaces, music and sound impacts both physical structures and the communities who live there. This deep connection between space and spirit will be explored through discussion and performance to understand how cities around the world use sound and music not just as entertainment but as a means of expression, resistance, and community building. This narrative underpins the event's schedule, ensuring that FutureSound resonates deeply with the history and future of urban soundscapes.
Cognitive anthropologist DR.MARTHA NEWSON will explore how ancient rituals of sound and synchrony are being reimagined in today's urban landscapes. With a focus on the underground scenes where the 4Ds (dance, drums, drugs, and sleep deprivation) thrive, her work delves into how these primal experiences have the potential to transcend social boundaries, forging deep connections and a new social cohesion essential for the cities of tomorrow.
As a leading authority on urban and contemporary culture, NORMSKI is set to take Futuresound on a unique visual journey through his incredible archives, spanning back to the 1980's for a very special curation where he will shine a spotlight on how music and culture have shaped the very spirit of the sound of London... With a prolific career spanning Music, Television Broadcasting, Photography, Fashion and Journalism, NORMSKI has become a true cultural icon.
Other highlights from the event are set to include a live audience soundscape experiment from DJ/Producer BUSHWACKA and “How Music Makes Cities Better” segment from SHAIN SHAPIRO, author and one of the world’s leading music and cultural policy thinkers.
The audience will get to learn about a new powerful kind of collective artistic and sound immersive experience ‘DREAMACHINE’ hosted by JENNIFER CROOK. Dreamachine is inspired by an extraordinary but little-known 1959 invention by artist–inventor Brion Gysin whose experimental homemade device used flickering light to create vivid illusions, kaleidoscopic patterns and explosions of colour in the mind of the viewer. Dreamachine features collaborations with Turner Prize-winning collective Assemble, Grammy-nominated composer JON HOPKINS & Professor ANIL SETH.
The event also features award-winning artist and composer ROBOT KOCH for his only UK Live performance of 2024. An innovative musician who is known for exploring new sonic territories, his appearance at The Future is Sound will also mark the release of his new album “Allow” on November 22nd.
The album features, a truly international all-female group of vocalists and instrumentalists with Norwegian harpist and artist EIRLYS, London-based artist KATE FLEUR YOUNG (who will join Robot for the Alexandra Palace show) longtime vocalist collaborator DELHIA DE FRANCE, American-born singer PEIA, LA-based Composer and violinist SAVANNAH JO and Brazilian flautist DANIELA MARS each contributing throughout.
With a profound fascination for the convergence of science and spirituality, Robot Koch creates music that transcends traditional boundaries, crafting auditory landscapes that invite listeners on a deep inward journey. Both the new album and live performance from the visionary sonic explorer encapsulates his artistic work at the intersection of sound, art, and immersive experiences.
