The Ritual of Rave
Connecting Through Music and Movement
Dr. Martha Newson - psychologist, anthropologist & expert in human behaviour delivered a captivating talk ‘The Ritual of Rave’ at THE FUTURE IS SOUND. Her talk explored how rituals—especially those centred on music, dance and collective experiences—forge deep connections among individuals and communities.
At its core, rave culture exemplifies the human quest for connection and belonging, a drive that dates back to our hunter-gatherer ancestors. From ancient fire rituals accompanied by drumming to modern dance floors, shared rituals have long provided a way to bond beyond societal divides such as class and ethnicity. Music and synchrony, Dr. Newson explained ‘are particularly powerful tools for creating collective identity and social cohesion.’
She described the "4Ds"—DANCE, DRUMS, DRUGS and SLEEP DEPRIVATION—as key elements of modern rave culture that echo ancient communal practices. These shared experiences foster a sense of unity, helping participants find belonging within subcultures and larger, more inclusive collectives. As seen in movements like acid house, these rituals transcend personal differences, creating a vital sense of connection in urban environments.
Dr. Newson’s insights emphasise that rituals aren't relics of the past; they are essential for fostering social bonds in today’s rapidly changing cities.
